Ask a homework question

Pick a subject, then type your question, snap a photo of the page, or say it out loud.

On this page
  1. Ask by typing
  2. Ask with a photo
  3. Ask with your voice

The Learning Studio is where you ask your homework questions. Each question starts a conversation, called a chat. TutorCat saves your chats so you can come back to them.

Ask by typing

  1. Tap Learning in the menu. On a phone, tap Learn at the bottom.
  2. TutorCat asks "What are we working on today?" Under Pick a subject, tap a subject: Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry or English. For anything else, tap + Other.
  3. Type your question in the box.
  4. Tap the send button (the arrow), or press Enter on a keyboard.
A new session, with Math picked and a question typed
  1. 1: Pick a subject
  2. 2: Type your question
  3. 3: Or snap a photo
  4. 4: Or say it out loud
  5. 5: Send it

If you forget to pick a subject, that's OK. TutorCat files it under "Other". You can rename it later. See "Your chats".

Ask with a photo

Got a worksheet or a page in your book? Snap it.

  1. Tap the camera button, Add a photo of your problem.
  2. Take a photo, or choose one you already have.
  3. Wait for "Photo ready to send". TutorCat makes big photos smaller first, so they upload faster.
  4. If you like, type a caption, like "Question 3 please".
  5. Tap the send button.

Changed your mind? Tap the small × on the photo to remove it.

TutorCat can answer a photo with a whiteboard that shows you how to do the problem. See Snap a photo, get a board.

Ask with your voice

If you see a microphone button, you can say your question out loud.

  1. Tap Say your question out loud, or press and hold it.
  2. Speak. You see "Listening…" and a timer. You can talk for up to 60 seconds.
  3. To finish: let go if you were holding, or tap the mic again.
  4. TutorCat turns your voice into words in the box. It never sends them by itself. Read them, fix anything it heard wrong, then tap send.

Your recording is turned into text and then thrown away. It is never saved.

While the tutor is replying

After you send, the tutor starts working on your question. You see "Thinking about your answer". Then the reply appears, word by word.

If you asked TutorCat to explain something, the reply may come as a drawn whiteboard instead, with a pen and a voice. See Learn on the whiteboard.

The tutor thinking about a reply, with the send button paused
  1. 1: The tutor is replying
  2. 2: Wait for the reply

While the tutor is replying:

  • The box says "Tutor is replying…" and the send button shows a pause shape.
  • Wait for the reply to finish before you ask the next thing. If you send too early, you'll see "TutorCat is still answering. Wait for the reply, then send." Don't worry, your words stay in the box.
  • If you see "TutorCat is thinking. The answer will appear here.", the reply is still coming. It just shows up all at once instead of word by word.

For younger students (grades 3-5)

Your Studio says "Hi" and your name, then What do you want to learn? Tap one of the big tiles: Maths, Science, Reading or The world.

Under the tiles are big round buttons:

  • The camera button snaps a photo of your page.
  • The keyboard button, Type your question, opens a box to type in.
  • If voice is on for you, there is a microphone button too. Tap it and say your question.
