A nine-year-old and a seventeen-year-old need different things from a homework tutor. TutorCat is one app, but it changes how it looks and talks based on the grade a student gives when they sign up.

Grades 3 to 5: bigger and simpler

For the youngest students, the Learning Studio becomes friendlier and easier to use:

  • A warm welcome and four big tiles. "Hi Sam! What do you want to learn?" with large tiles for Maths, Science, Reading and The world.
  • Big round buttons. One for a photo of the page, one to start typing (Type your question), and a microphone where voice is turned on.
  • Larger text and bigger buttons everywhere in the studio, so small fingers can tap them.
The grades 3 to 5 studio: "Hi Sam! What do you want to learn?" with four large subject tiles and big round photo and typing buttons
  1. 1: Big subject tiles
  2. 2: Tap to type
  3. 3: Or snap the page
  • Replies read aloud automatically. Under the latest reply, a switch reads "Read aloud · plays automatically for grades 3–5". Tap it to turn reading off ("Reading aloud: off") or back on.
  • Steps in short, friendly sentences. The tutor knows the student's grade and pitches its language to match.
  • A simpler check-in. The wellbeing page asks "How are you feeling?" and "Was school easy or hard today?" with big buttons.
  • Shorter safety messages. If a young child writes something worrying, the support message uses short sentences and keeps only the most important details about each helpline.
A grades 3 to 5 session: "What is 7 times 8?" split into three short steps, with the read-aloud switch underneath
  1. 1: Short, friendly steps
  2. 2: Replies read aloud

Grades 6 to 12: the full studio

Older students see subject chips (Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, English, + Other), a single question box with photo and microphone buttons, and the same step-by-step Steps card. Every tutor reply has its own speaker button for reading aloud on request. The tutor's language grows with the student's grade.

The rules are the same for every age

Whatever the grade, the answer is earned the same way, parents see the same things, and safety works the same way. Children below their country's consent age always need a parent to say yes before they can start. During sign-up, a younger child sees: "A grown-up at home needs to say it's OK before you start. We'll help you ask them next."

Comfortable for everyone

TutorCat follows the device's light or dark setting to start with. In Settings → Appearance, a student can choose:

  • Light, Dark or Follow system for the colour theme.
  • Reduce motion, which turns off celebrations and floating animations. If the device already asks for less motion, TutorCat follows it.
